Random
Next Chilson is called, "Seventeen Stills." No, the next one is "Random Acts." It is on the two artists, Marsh and Stan. Strung together. The 17 piece to follow.
Marsh is a painter or etcher of NY scenes. His work is informed of the photo. Stan does this field of photography. Both are compulsive. Both do their environments as they find them. They are endlessly curious with what they see. Yet one records and then interprets what he sees. Funnels it through another filter and makes a sketch or a painting. Stan does not do this. He stays with his first take. I don't think he sees himself as an artist, but as a documentarian. That is what his generation did. I think that is what Marsh does, except he has to get known so he does interpretations of his seminal work of photo and sketch in order to get known and sell. Seems fair but it is also fair that I acknowledge his greatest work. And in that his work is documentary just like Stan. Documentary work can be great art. See Atget or Plowden or Evans. It has in it its own statement of beauty. So I will do the Marsh piece which is too long to produce but in a few years. Take some of it for next Chilson.
Next take. Sunday, Raining.12-1Seems I did the above and put it in the bank. Didn't know I did it. Seems to make sense to counterpoise the two and make a statement on the times, only how? One is a villagearian and the other documents the seamy side of city life. Print, print and more print. The Armstrong Tire ad behind the cop in the early Franklin piece. The splashy color from the New Yorker flashes. In between. That will work. So what is it called, this next Chilson? Random or Random Stills. At random in Massachusetts and New York City. At Random is it. Where are you? At random.
